This iconic white structure doubles as an acoustic reflector; its semicircular, curved surface resembles an open seashell. Noguchi had spoken of incorporating a space for music into the playground—an idea that aligns with his approach of designing the entire park as a single, massive sculpture.[1]

Moerenuma Park "Tetra Mound"

1-1 Moerenuma-koen, Higashi-ku, Sapporo-shi, Hokkaido 007-0011

"Tetra Mound" is a monument featuring a simple yet striking design: a circular mound of turf rising within a structure of gleaming silver stainless-steel pillars. While the triangular pillars exude a mysterious luster, a closer look reveals that the discontinuously polished metal surfaces reflect the blue of the sky, casting a sharp, brilliant light. Step onto the grassy mound and look up at the sky, and you will feel a connection between the earth and the heavens.[2]

Moerenuma Park "Glass Pyramid "HIDAMARI""

1-1 Moerenuma-koen, Higashi-ku, Sapporo-shi, Hokkaido 007-0011

The "Glass Pyramid" serves as a hub for cultural activities within the park and stands as a symbolic monument. Although referred to as a pyramid, a closer look reveals a complex structure composed of a combination of triangular faces, cubes, and other geometric forms. While its specific shape differs, it is said to be an homage to the "Glass Pyramid"—the main entrance located in the Cour Napoléon of the Louvre Museum in Paris. Incidentally, the "Apia Dome" (Tower of Light), situated right in front of the South Exit of Sapporo Station, features a similar design; that structure is the work of Kan Yasuda, a sculptor who represents Hokkaido.[3]

Moerenuma Park "Sea Fountain"

1-1 Moerenuma-koen, Higashi-ku, Sapporo-shi, Hokkaido 007-0011

The "Sea Fountain" is a dynamic "water sculpture" that shoots jets of water up to 25 meters into the air. However, the fountain operates on a set schedule—twice a day (or three times on weekends and holidays)—and unfortunately, when I visited, it looked just as you see here. If you plan to visit, I recommend checking the operating times on the website beforehand. That said, there is a certain charm to a fountain without water when viewed against a clear autumn sky—or so one might argue.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Its saddle and reins are adorned with "Kurbits"—colorful, painted floral patterns—creating a beautiful sight that harmonizes with the lush green landscape of Sweden Hills.The term "Kurbits" derives from the Latin *Cucurbita* and refers to plants in the gourd family, such as bottle gourds and pumpkins. It is said to be inspired by the legend of "Jonah's gourd" (or pumpkin)—a plant that, according to the Book of Jonah in the Old Testament, grew large overnight to provide shade from the sun.[1]

Sweden Hills, Tobetsu-cho, Ishikari-gun, Hokkaido, Japan

Sweden Hills in Tobetsu Town is not merely a stylish, Nordic-style residential development; it is a community born from the convergence of a corporate vision, local revitalization efforts, and diplomatic and cultural exchange between Japan and Sweden. As you likely know, Moomin originated in Finland, though it is sometimes mistaken for being Swedish. This is because the creator, Tove Jansson, was a Swedish-speaking Finn—part of a demographic comprising a small percentage of the population—and the original Moomin stories were written in Swedish. In short, while the work is Finnish in terms of nationality, it is deeply rooted in Swedish language and culture; one might even say it is a work that bridges both nations.[3]

IKEA Pop-up Store in Tobetsu

359-1 Ota, Tobetsu-cho, Hokkaido 061-3773, Japan

(Hokuo no Kaze Roadside Station Tobetsu)

An IKEA pop-up store opened at this roadside station this past May. As there are currently no permanent IKEA stores in Hokkaido, this pop-up marks the company's first retail presence in the prefecture. IKEA is the world's largest furniture and home goods retailer, originating in Sweden. Its corporate culture is rooted in the spirit of the Småland region—where the company was founded—emphasizing frugality, thrift, and ingenuity. It offers home furnishings based on a design concept that combines beauty, practicality, durability, and affordability with a commitment to sustainability. Why was Tobetsu chosen as the location for this first pop-up store in Hokkaido? By now, the answer should be clear: for IKEA, a company with Swedish roots, Tobetsu—a town with deep ties to Swedish culture—was seen as a location with a strong natural affinity.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hokuou no Kaze Michi-no-Eki Tobetsu

774-11 Tobetsuto, Tobetsu-cho, Hokkaido 061-3773, Japan

Viewed in this light, one could arguably say that Ebetsu is actually a city well-endowed with cultural facilities for reading.Eniwa City, a neighbor of Ebetsu, officially promotes itself as a "City of Reading," with the municipality itself pioneering initiatives such as the "Book Start" program, designated morning reading times, and the placement of librarians in every school. More than a dozen other local governments across Japan—including Hachinohe City (Aomori Prefecture), Daigo Town (Ibaraki Prefecture), and Isesaki City (Gunma Prefecture)—have similarly declared themselves "Cities of Books" or "Cities of Children's Reading," and all are actively working to build a regional brand centered on reading. The farm currently raises approximately 360 head of cattle. While it likely depends on the timing and weather, the volume of blossoms seems to have increased by 10% or 20% compared to this time last year. The shop’s rose garden reportedly features around 150 varieties, but I wondered just how many rose varieties exist in total. A quick AI search revealed estimates ranging from 30,000 to 50,000; since hundreds of new varieties are created through cross-breeding every year, the exact total remains unknown. In a sense, roses are like works of art crafted by human hands. Indeed, as I take photographs, I find that each flower possesses its own unique beauty—so much so that I lose track of time just gazing at them.[1]

ROICE' Kamiebetsu Store

437-15 Kamiebetsu, Ebetsu-shi, Hokkaido 067-0064, Japan

Since its inception, Royce' has operated under the philosophy of creating chocolate in Hokkaido that rivals authentic European varieties, placing great importance on high-quality cacao and unique recipes. It is a specialty chocolate shop deeply committed to its ingredients—for instance, by eschewing artificial flavorings to highlight the natural aroma of the cacao. While there are many chocolate shops in Japan with such strong dedication to their craft, most are high-end establishments that emphasize artisanal quality and command premium prices. One nationally popular example is Bel Amer; the brand operates primarily in department stores within major metropolitan areas like Tokyo and Osaka, and its signature "Palet Chocolat" sells for 3,888 yen for a box of ten. In contrast, Royce''s signature "Nama Chocolate" (fresh chocolate) is available at the accessible price of 1,215 yen per box. This brand philosophy of delivering high quality at an affordable price is undoubtedly one of Royce''s greatest appeals.[2]

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Niwa no Hana" is a highly regarded garden center among local gardening enthusiasts. The staff are very knowledgeable and willing to give helpful advice on how to grow and plant plants. However, I must confess that I have never actually bought anything from this shop. (I have been to the cafe, though.) As I was taking this photo, a male staff member, who I believe was the owner, approached me, and I was a little nervous, wondering if I might get scolded, when I said, "Excuse me, I'm taking a picture." "Go ahead, please. We appreciate it," the man replied with a smile. It's easy to see why the shop is so well-regarded. I was so captivated by its vibrant colors that I couldn't resist taking a picture. Echinacea is native to North America and has been used as a medicinal herb by Native Americans since ancient times. Its name comes from the Greek word for "hedgehog." Native Americans, hedgehogs, and the brightly colored petals that stimulate the viewer's eye—all of these perfectly match the image of this flower.As a side note, this flower's Japanese name is "Murasakibaren-giku." I imagine she might be the wife of the man who appeared to be the owner earlier. But I could be wrong. The shop isn't particularly spacious, but the natural decor gives it an overall homey atmosphere. You can enjoy the view of the lush garden from the window. Whether you're a gardening enthusiast or not, why not visit on a sunny day? You're sure to feel energized by the overflowing vitality of the plants.[3]

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

However, for an international airport with the largest number of flights in Japan, that number doesn't seem particularly large. Or perhaps it's just that my local New Chitose Airport has an unusually high number.

I took a limousine bus from Haneda Airport and got off at Kaihin-Makuhari Station. This area is one of Japan's leading event cities, centered around Makuhari Messe. High-rise buildings such as the World Business Garden line the streets, and the area has developed as a bayside area with a good balance of commercial facilities, offices, parks, and residential areas.

Chiba Marine Stadium

1 Mihama, Mihama-ku, Chiba-shi, Chiba-ken, Japan

Upon arriving at the stadium, the Chunichi Dragons' cheering section in the left field stands was already packed with fans in blue uniforms, enthusiastically cheering along to the announcements of the starting lineup. The cheering section for this team in the Kanto area seems even more passionate than that of their home region, the Chubu area.

In this three-game series, although they lost the first and third games (losing the series overall...), the Chunichi Dragons won the second game by a large margin of 11-4. In the top of the first inning, as soon as the game started, lead-off batter Okabayashi patiently waited 8 pitches before drawing a walk. The next batter, Ukai, hit a timely double to score the first run. Hosokawa then hit a two-run timely single to add to the score. And then Ishikawa Takaya hit a two-run home run, scoring five runs in that inning. This alone was enough to bring tears to the eyes of Chunichi fans, but then in the top of the third inning, Ukai hit a grand slam, making it an incredibly exciting game that left everyone wondering if such a thing could really happen.

Tukuba Space center

2-1-1 Sengen, Tukuba-shi, Ibaraki 305-8505, Japan

During the daytime before the match started, since I had come all the way to the Kanto region, I decided to visit the Tsukuba Space Center in Ibaraki Prefecture. Space is one of my favorite topics, but explaining it in detail here would take too long, so I will omit it. I have read almost all of the books written by past astronauts, and I have also read several volumes of the manga "Space Brothers." Let me share one episode that particularly impressed me. When Koichi Wakata, a Japanese hero among astronauts, first became an astronaut, he couldn't understand the rapid-fire English of the air traffic controller giving instructions over the radio during fighter pilot training. Disheartened, on his way home in his car, the children's song "Poppo poppo, pigeon poppo, do you want some beans? Here you go" came out of his mouth, and tears welled up in his eyes. Astronauts are the elite of the elite, superhuman beings who can do anything, but even they all experience setbacks.

This massive, imposing, duct-filled metal structure is an actual rocket engine that was used. Looking at the winding, matte-textured ducts, for some reason, I'm reminded of the eerie design of the alien from the movie "Alien," starring Sigourney Weaver. It's metallic yet organic, and looks like a ferocious creature.

This tour allowed me to see the "closed environment adaptation training facility" that appeared in the manga "Space Brothers," and the control room where JAXA flight controllers are currently managing the operation of the "Kibo" experiment module of the International Space Station, which was quite impressive. After the tour, I ate "Space Katsu Curry" at the cafeteria. It was, to put it mildly, just a typical ready-made curry that tasted like something you'd find in a company cafeteria. It cost 1000 yen for one meal.
